We select only the large, thick beans

Hawaii KAU Coffee Extra Fancy is selected from the flat beans harvested on the farm, choosing the large, thick beans. The shape differs from the single round peaberry (No1 Grade), but the farm, the natural farming and the semi-washed process are the same.

It comes in two sizes, 100 g and 1 kg. The 1 kg pack is for those who drink it every day or want to buy in bulk. The thank-you gift in the Furusato Nozei (hometown tax donation) program of Shinjuku City, Tokyo, “Hawaii KAU Coffee roasted beans 200 g,” is also Extra Fancy.

Taste

Ka’u coffee has a rich aroma, refined fruitiness and sweetness with little bitterness, moderate acidity and a soft body (What Is Ka’u Coffee?). “Coffee: from bitter to sweet” is the motto of Hawaii KAU Coffee. Masashi Yamazaki, representative of M.G.K. Inc., our distributor in Japan, used to drink only sweetened coffee, and Ka’u coffee is what turned him on to black coffee.

How we recommend drinking it

  1. Brew it in a French press

Our farm owner John is a French press person. His reason: a paper filter absorbs the oils that give coffee its aroma.

  2. Best 3 to 5 days after roasting

By then the gas in the beans has escaped and the coffee brews with a clear taste.

  3. Store at room temperature with the air pressed out

Coffee farmers usually keep beans in a zip-top bag with the air pressed out, at room temperature.

Extra Fancy is the top grade of flat beans

Flat beans are the common bean shape: the two seeds inside a coffee cherry. Extra Fancy is the top grade of those flat beans, selected for the large, thick beans.

Our Extra Fancy is No2 Grade

These are 100% Ka’u coffee beans grown at Kau Ocean Vista Coffee Estate in the Ka’u district of Hawaii Island by farm owner John Ah San, with natural farming that does not rely on chemical fertilizer. After harvest they are processed with the semi-washed process, which leaves the sticky fruit pulp on the bean, and dried under the Hawaiian sun. The NN DRINKS online shop (ships within Japan only) carries two sizes, 100 g and 1 kg.

Also available through Furusato Nozei in Japan
