The Great Crack in Ka'u is an incredible place which very few know about. it is an 8 mile long, 60 foot wide and 60 foot deep crack as seen from the photo below. To find The Great crack take Highway 11 from Volcano towards Kona. Between the 46 and 47-mile marker, on the mauka (mountain) side of the road is a paved pullout, and on the left side of the road is an overgrown dirt road. PARK your vehicle at the pullout on the mauka side. The Great Crack is on the makai (ocean) side of Highway 11 and you take the gated road across from where you PARK your vehicle. Ka'u is desert so bring water and hats! Click here for a map. Scroll down for a Google Satellite Image of the Great Crack and a link to a web site on more details if you plan to hike there.
